Pediatric Care with the LDIM Model
We understand that children have unique eye care needs, and early detection and treatment of vision issues are critical for their overall development and well-being. The London District Intercollaborative Model of Care (LDIM) is designed to make pediatric care more accessible.
Our collaborative care model, involving optometrists and ophthalmologists, helps children receive comprehensive, specialized care in a timely manner. Through our centralized referral system, we strive to reduce wait times and provide effective treatment.

Expanding Pediatric Care
Access to pediatric care in ophthalmology can be a challenge due to a shortage of ophthalmologists, and oftentimes optometrists are more than capable of managing many of these pediatric cases. We want to help manage and coordinate conditions such as:
- Amblyopia (lazy eye): Early detection and treatment are crucial to prevent vision loss.
- Strabismus (crossed eyes): Coordinated care can help align the eyes and improve vision.
- Myopia management: Addressing the growing concern of nearsightedness in children with innovative treatment options.
- Pediatric glaucoma: Specialized management to prevent long-term damage to a child’s vision.
- Ocular Complications or risks secondary to systemic disease.
How the LDIM Model Works
The LDIM model facilitates a seamless pathway for pediatric eye care, starting with referrals from general practitioners (GPs), optometrists (ODs), and other medical doctors (MDs).
Children with specific eye health concerns are referred to LDIM through our centralized referral system. Our collaborative approach is designed to reduce wait times for surgical consultations and enhance access to specialized care.
Pediatric patients are typically seen by an OD within the program first. The OD performs a comprehensive eye exam and manages the child’s condition if it falls within their scope of practice.
By compartmentalizing cases and managing less complex conditions within the OD scope, we can significantly reduce the wait times for pediatric ophthalmology consultations and surgeries.
If the OD determines that the condition requires specialized care or surgical intervention, the child is referred to a pediatric ophthalmologist for further evaluation and treatment.
After treatment, the OD takes over for ongoing management and follow-up for continuity of care and a smooth transition between providers.
Information & Referrals
For healthcare providers, our website serves as an educational resource, outlining our model of care and providing the necessary information for referrals. Our centralized fax number for referrals simplifies the process, confirming that patients are triaged and managed efficiently.
For patients, our website is an informational landing spot where you can understand the referral process and know what to expect from your care journey. We provide links to additional resources for those seeking more information about specific conditions or treatments.
Improving Access to Pediatric Care
Access to pediatric ophthalmology services is becoming increasingly challenging due to a shortage of specialists.
Our collaborative model aims to maximize the available resources by using the expertise of optometrists for primary care and ophthalmologists for advanced treatment, helping children receive the care they need without long waits.
